TRAFFIC PROJECT

2011-09-26 - TRAFFIC PROJECT

The St. Thomas Police Service has initiated a new traffic enforcement project on Elm Street between Fairview Avenue and Wilson Avenue. The area was identified through a traffic study initiative between the St. Thomas Police and the Kiwanis Golden K members. Volunteers from Golden K use the police radar sign to monitor traffic in/around schools each spring and fall and report their statistics back to the police. The fall 2011 campaign showed that speeds on Elm Street were much higher than the posted speed limit (either 40 km/h or 50 km/h). The speeds, combined with the fact that these areas are high in pedestrian (including school aged children) traffic, prompted the St. Thomas Police to target this area through an enforcement project.
