2009-07-31 - The St. Thomas Police Service would like to advise citizens there has been an increase in property crimes within the City.

The St. Thomas Police Service would like to advise citizens there has been an increase in property crimes within the City.

Since June 1, 2009, there have been thirty-seven (37) reported bicycle thefts, twenty (20) reported thefts from motor vehicles and twenty-three (23) reported break and enters.

These crimes are occurring throughout the City of St. Thomas and are not restricted to any one particular neighbourhood.

What you, as citizens, can do to help reduce crime:

Bicycles:
  • Store your bicycle in a secure location
  • Always lock your bicycle, whether it’s in a garage or on a porch
  • Invest in a good quality “U” lock or steel chain with a padlock
Break and Enters:
  • Lock all doors and windows
  • Install a deadbolt locking system
  • Keep shrubs, bushes and hedges trimmed to a height less than 3 feet
  • Turn on outside lights at night and consider installing motion detector lights
  • Don’t open your door to anyone you don’t know
  • Secure basement windows with grills or bars
Theft from Motor Vehicle:
  • Lock vehicle when not in use
  • Remove all valuables from vehicles when unattended

Call 9-1-1 to report suspicious persons or activities!
