On January 21, 2009, at 12:01 a.m., the new Smoke-Free Ontario Amendment Act takes effect. This amendment prohibits any driver or passenger in a motor vehicle from smoking tobacco while someone else under the age of 16 years is present in the motor vehicle. The law applies to
both moving and stationary motor vehicles, regardless whether any window, sunroof, rooftop, door, or other feature of the motor vehicle is open.
The Ministry of Health Promotion advises that second hand smoke in motor vehicles can be up to twenty seven (27) times greater than a smoker’s home. Children are especially vulnerable to second hand smoke because they breathe more air relative to body weight.
This legislation will be enforced by Police Officers and can carry a maximum fine of up to $250.00
The St Thomas Police Service would like to remind citizens not to call 9-1-1 when registering complaints.
For more information regarding this legislation, contact the Elgin-St Thomas Public Health Unit at (519) 631-3159 or contact the Smokers’ Helpline at 1-877-513-5333 (www.smokershelpline.ca.)
